Monique Cohen celebrates ‘earthday’

Birthday kisses and hugs were in order for VMBS’ Monique Cohen who held her ‘earthday’ soiree on Saturday January 5, at the Old Stony Hill Hotel, Gibson Road.

The Claims manager and legal counsel at Victoria Mutual Building Society, Ms Cohen was the belle of the ball, resplendent in a fire engine red sleeveless, floor length gown with sequined embroidery trimmings at the top, waist and hemline.

On arrival after signing the guest book, partygoers were greeted with steaming cups of pumpkin soup and told to mix and mingle and try to refrain from talking ‘shop’. Monique’s friends, mostly members of the legal fraternity were gathered at the poolside, which was gaily decorated with blue and white balloons.

Among the gathering were attorney at law Hilary Phillips, QC, and director of Pulse Investments and who proudly boasted that she taught Ms Cohen at law school and has been proud of her achievements since then.

The fancy spread prepared by G. B. Caterers had many weight watchers making a mockery of their New Year’s resolutions, as there was something to tempt every palate. Peppered shrimp, potato and tossed salads, sweet and sour fish, corned pork, shrimp fried rice, gungo rice and peas, curried goat and oxtail made choosing what to eat that much more difficult.

Later Ms Cohen gathered her closest friends, all attorneys with whom she went to law school, to assist her in cutting the huge rectangular cake decorated in blue, pink and white. The lot included Elizabeth Salmon, Theresa Bowen, and Tania Mott. Stacia Pinnock, who was also celebrating her birthday, was feted like Monique, as they also sang ‘Happy Birthday’ and wished her all the best for 2008.

The deejay then opened the dance floor with the aptly chosen Chris De Burgh’s Lady In Red for Monique and the partying continued well into the morning.
